Dee Dee Bridgewater’s move to France awhile back has resulted in her having a relatively low profile in jazz. This excellent live set should help restore her reputation. Whether it be a three-song Horace Silver medley, the warhorse “All of Me,” Jobim’s “How Insensitive,” “Night in Tunisia” or the rarely performed “Strange Fruit,” Bridgewater (who is backed by a French rhythm section) is in top form, singing with swing and sensitivity.

This LP has a particularly strong all-around set by the Modern Jazz Quartet. While John Lewis’ “Versailles” and an 11-minute “Fontessa” show the seriousness of the group (and the influence of Western classical music), other pieces (such as “Bluesology,” “Woody ‘N You” and a pair of ballads) look toward the group’s roots in bop and permit the band to swing hard.

This CD brings back a near-classic (one of many from this period) by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Drummer Joe Dodge had just joined the group and he joins with bassist Ron Crotty in laying down a solid and subtle foundation. However the real action takes place up front with pianist Dave Brubeck and altoist Paul Desmond. Their individual solos are full of creative ideas on six standards (most memorable are “All The Things You Are,” “Laura” and “I’ll Never Smile Again”) and their interaction and tradeoffs are timeless. Recommended.

This is the third and final guest appearance by clarinetist Bill Smith in the place of Paul Desmond with the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Like the earlier record dates, this 1961 session focuses exclusively on Smith’s compositions, resulting in a very different sound for the band than its normal mix of the leader’s songs and standards. Smith was a member of Brubeck’s adventurous octet of the late ’40s and, like the pianist, also studied with French composer Darius Milhaud. So the clarinetist is willing to take chances, utilizing a mute on his instrument in “Pan’s Pipes,” and having drummer Joe Morello use his timpani sticks on the piano strings in the swinging “The Unihorn.” Smith proves himself very much in Desmond’s league with his witty solos and equally amusing, pun-filled liner notes. While none of these songs became a regular part of Brubeck’s repertoire, even after Smith replaced tenorist Jerry Bergonzi as a member of the quartet in 1982, this is easily the best of the three albums that he made with Dave Brubeck during the late ’50s and early ’60s.

George Howard , Wayne Shorter (soprano saxophone);

AMG:
This was bassist Stanley Clarke’s twelfth solo set, and one of his very few that would be recommended to jazz (as opposed to funk and R&B) listeners. On the instrumental set, Clarke’s bass is featured in a wide variety of settings, including duets with tap dancer Gregory Hines and drummer John Robinson, a quartet with Wayne Shorter (“Goodbye Pork Pie Hat”), in a power trio with guitarist Allan Holdsworth and drummer Stewart Copeland, a piece with George Duke (on acoustic piano for a change) and soprano saxophonist George Howard, a quartet with the synthesizers of Steve Hunt, and “Funny How Time Flies,” which has a colorful Freddie Hubbard trumpet solo. Throughout, Clarke’s bass has plenty of solo space, and he shows how strong a player he can be when given decent material.

Altoist Jackie McLean met with up his idol, tenor-saxophonist Dexter Gordon for a couple of club dates and the result is a pair of hard-swinging if somewhat loose albums; the accompanying set is The Source. The pair of saxophonists (along with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Alex Riel) give four pieces (“On the Trail” and three obscure originals) lengthy renditions with Dexter’s “All Clean” being over 17 minutes long. The music falls short of being classic but is quite spirited and recommended to fans of both Dexter Gordon and Jackie McLean

Joe Farnsworth (Drums).

By Sean Coughlin:
Chim Chim Cheree has been dubbed “a tribute to John Coltrane.” Returning with usual sidemen Harold Mabern at the piano, Joe Farnsworth on drums, and bassist John Webber, this album represents a thorough examination of Coltrane’s music made up of Coltrane originals and tunes Coltrane ostensibly owned throughout his career. While George Coleman, Dexter Gordon, and Sonny Stitt are most often cited as the foremost influences on Alexander, Coltrane is clearly among them.
Alexander’s take on “You Don’t Know What Love Is” showcases his lush subtone in the lower register as he cadenzas his way through the opening of the tune with grace and sophistication. Seemingly a bit drab for an opener, Alexander sparks some life into this with tasty lines—bluesy and bop, with enough variety to keep the listener engaged.
Mabern takes charge on “Dear Lord,” setting up an active samba-like groove while offering subtle harmonic shifts and tasteful, melodic comping. Much more in the Alexander vein than Coltrane, it contains a sublime, lively energy.
Tadd Dameron’s “On a Misty Night” is a gem from the bop era that unfortunately rarely gets played or recorded. Mabern’s approach is a bit dated, swinging more like Brubeck than Dameron, but still manages some nice lines. Unfortunately, Alexander doesn’t really kick things into gear and sound comfortable until trading with Farnsworth. A double time feel in the bridge as in the original recording Mating Call (Prestige, 1956) would have been refreshing here.
“Chim Chim Cheree” and “Pursuance” are the clear highlights, echoing back to the sound of Coltrane’s classic quartet. These two tracks contain a rawness not heard on others from the album. Emotion and creativity at the forefront, Alexander pushes his own boundaries & gets away from simply playing changes to explore something deeper. The communication within the group seems heightened, sounding as if everyone is channeling their representative from Coltrane’s classic quartet.
Adding some variety, “Afro Blue” lends itself well to Alexander’s riff-like improvisation, allowing endless sequential opportunities over a static harmonic foundation. It would have been nice if this was opened up for both Farnsworth and Webber to come out and play.
“The Night Has a Thousand Eyes” is a powerhouse for both Alexander and Farnsworth, a guy who really knows how to highlight all the wondrous colors of the drum set. With precision and unrelenting commitment to swing, Farnsworth really shines on this one.
With “Wise One,” the quartet captures a distinctive mystical and yearning sound that Coltrane had in his best work. Alexander has even seemed to channel a timbre that is closer to Coltrane’s, bringing the album to a satisfying point of closure.
As Alexander matures, it sounds as if he’s offering more than his typical nicely packaged straight-ahead post-bop. Without question he’s taken that just about as far as it is going to go. This album may be the first chapter in what to expect next from this still somewhat young lion.

AMG:
In the vein of many a smooth West Coast jazz outing, this 1958 disc finds original cool stylist Getz paired with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on a very enjoyable selection of jazz standards and Tjader originals. The lineup includes pianist Vince Guaraldi, guitarist Eddie Duran, bassist Scott La Faro, and drummer Billy Higgins (this was one of the earliest record dates for either La Faro or Higgins, both of whom were playing with Getz at San Francisco’s Black Hawk in between recording sessions). Guaraldi’s spry “Ginza Samba” kicks thing off with nimble and imaginative statements by all the soloists. Tjader’s swinging originals “Crow’s Nest” and “Big Bear” provide prime solo vehicles as well, while his lovely waltz number “Liz-Anne” adds some nice contrast to the set, eliciting one of Getz’s best solos in the process. The group rounds things out with fine ballad readings of “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” and “For All We Know.” A suitable title for both Getz and Tjader fans. Highly recommended.

Track List:

01. Yardbird Suite (Parker) 7:20
02. Since I Fell for You (Johnson) 8:13

Personnel:

Cannonball Adderley (Sax (Alto));
Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, Julian Gordon (Sax (Tenor));
Nat Adderley (Cornet);
Hampton Hawes (Piano (Electric));
Bob Cranshaw (Bass (Electric));
Kenny Clarke (Drums);
Kenneth Nash (Conga).

AMG:
Ammons, whose studio recordings of the period were somewhat commercial, is heard in excellent form playing a blues and three standards with the backing of a fine rhythm section: Hampton Hawes (who unfortunately sticks to electric piano), electric bassist Bob Cranshaw, drummer Kenny Clarke and Kenneth Nash on congas. Best of all is a 17-minute blues on which Ammons welcomes fellow tenor Dexter Gordon, cornetist Nat Adderley and altoist Cannonball Adderley; the four horns all get to trade off with each other. This is one of the better late-period Gene Ammons records.
