Review:
On this album Dewey Redman is highlighted in a number of diverse groups, which makes it a captivating and a personal triumph to his musical talents. The majority of the tunes match Redman’s tenor with the superb bassist Sirone and drummer Eddie Moore. On a couple of the tracks, he plays the zither. In addition to his trio, trumpeter Ted Daniel and violinist Leroy Jenkins, come together for an extensive delivery of two complex originals. It is here on “Somnifacient” that Redman switches to clarinet. These alternate instruments are no match to the mastery of his tenor playing. “Qow” alone is an exceptional ten-minute workout. Overall this one is well worth a listen if you are driven in any way by freer forms of jazz.

Review:
This share is a belated tribute to the passing of a wonderful jazz musician and talented composer, Marion Brown. Here Brown assembles an amazing quartet of similarly gifted musicians of which none need any introduction. This album eluded US sales by being released in Japan. Although a CD was released later, it still remains hard to obtain. The music presented is a well performed mixture of Brown, Waldron, Heyman, Sour, Eyton & Green Mingus and Monk compositions. Apart from Brown’s own tunes all players place their mark to great effect and cohesion to the other familiarised pieces. If you were to procure this album for just one track my choice would be the beautifully executed title track “Soul Eyes” {Mal Waldron}. Brown’s tone and deliverance is impeccable and alongside Barron’s clean piano lines the piece is a joy right throughout. In having praised the main soloists it would be criminal not to shower additional accolades on the rhythm section. McBee manages to really lock together these sets and of course without Jones’ driving percussive force there would have been ample opportunity for the tunes, especially Mingus’ and Monk’s to be trivialised. Overall this album is a must have if you are a Marion Brown aficionado or a newcomer to Modern-Avant-Garde Jazz.

A Cuíca or “kweeca” is a Brazilian friction drum often used in samba music. The tone it produces has a high-pitched squeaky timbre.
A Tumali or “Tagalog” is an aerophone blowing instrument made from carabao horn. It is used for calling people or sending messages over wide distances.

Info/Review:
This is Baikida E.J. Carroll’s first album as a leader. It has been severely overlooked with no reissue either on LP or CD. In this regard it is quite a rare vinyl.
The album showcases some of the diverse facets of his musical interests. “Orange Fish Tears” builds up quite a spiritual and peaceful atmosphere for the listener, similar to early Marion Brown multi-instrumental albums. “Forest Scorpion” invokes a real ethnic flavour. There is also a Latin American dance style brought out by the repetitive rhythm patterns created on an assortment of percussion instruments. “Rue Roger” is duo between Carroll and Oliver Lake; it is quite an abstract piece that leads into free improvisation similar to that produced by members of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, especially Roscoe Mitchell. “Porte D’Orléans” is a piece where the group as a whole also launches into free improvisation very much in the style that the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) and the Black Artists Group (BAG) were performing around this period.

There are also similarities to some of the early albums that Steve Lacy was producing whilst in Paris. Backed with Oliver Lake and Nana Vasconcelos this album was destined to make its mark. Both players have gone onto record extensively with a broad spectrum of modern jazz groups. Overall it is very much an interesting and enchanting album to fill your mind. A real lost gem!
This upload was taken from an original vinyl rip. The ensuing wav files were optimised and encoded to flac.

Title Of Album: Stan Getz with Cal Tjader
Recorded: San Francisco, California on February 8, 1958.

Review by Richard S. Ginell

An amazing ad-hoc session, thrown together in a San Francisco studio with now legendary personnel from two different groups. The lineup says it all — a meeting of the Latin jazz maestro and the future champion of Brazilian jazz, plus, from Tjader’s group, Vince Guaraldi on piano and guitarist Eddie Duran, and from Getz’s band, the then unknown teenager Scott LaFaro on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. A moment for the history books is an 11-minute workout on Guaraldi’s pentatonic souvenir of Tokyo, “Ginza Samba,” where the fast-samba theme finds Getz blowing to a Brazilian rhythm four years before “Desafinado.” The jamming, though, is in a straight-ahead bebop groove where Getz’s eloquence unfolds with almost unearthly ease. The rest of the album alternates between lyric ballads and solid, though non-Latin, swinging where Tjader, Guaraldi, and Duran graft onto the great Getz rhythm section like they’ve been playing together for decades (check out the funky combustion on “Crow’s Nest”). Collectors’ note: when Getz became a bossa nova star, this album was reissued in 1963 as Stan Getz With Cal Tjader with a different set of liner notes and remains available on LP and cassette in this form

When Charles Lloyd showcased his quartet in a live setting on 2008′s Rabo de Nube, it was one of the more exciting, free-flowing dates of that year. It was physical, full of intense engagement and fiery energy. On that date, he performed a number of tunes he’d recorded before, along with new compositions. Mirror, recorded with the same band — drummer Eric Harland, pianist Jason Moran, and bassist Reuben Rogers — in a Santa Barbara studio, is, as the title suggests, a mirror image of the previous outing. Here too, the saxophonist revisits some older material with, thanks in large part to his sidemen, new ears. The material is mostly gently swinging ballads and outré investigations showcasing an even more spiritual side to Lloyd’s playing and arranging. But it also displays the great intuitive nuances this band is capable of. While the set opens with an elegant and gently swinging reading of the standard “I Fall in Love Too Easily,” it’s the follow-up, the spiritual “Go Down Moses,” that showcases the group’s persona with its modal, questioning concerns, while keeping the tune firmly in the church. The title track appeared on 1989′s Canto, and is here performed with the kind of deep commitment and sense of interdependent energy only time and wisdom can impart. Another tune from that album, “Desolation Sound,” while still a ballad, features a lot more engagement from the players here: Moran’s solo looks in and through the changes to find a way outside and gets there. Harland’s shimmering breaks add more crackle than on the original. Likewise, “The Water Is Wide” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are performed, in their restrained way, more energetically than they were on their respective albums. One of Mirror’s great surprises is a tender reading of the Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No.” While the melody is inescapable, Lloyd very quickly transforms it into a jazz ballad of haunting, romantic beauty. On a pair of Monk tunes here — “Ruby, My Dear” and “Monk’s Mood” — Moran’s own musical personality is given free rein. He expresses it with his deft senses of rhythmic and harmonic intuition, underscoring unexpected phrases and elaborating on others. Ultimately, Mirror is another Lloyd triumph. It may not shake the rafters with its kinetics, but it does dazzle with the utterly symbiotic interplay between leader and sidemen.
