LOVE REMEMBERS is a successful pop album, whether George Benson’s dishing out vocals or instrumentals. This 1993 recording produced by Benson himself is not for hard core jazz fans, but rather smooth jazz or R&B fans who will enjoy the familiar instrumental tunes. This is what Benson was going for and this is what he achieved.

Benson’s take on “Somewhere Island” works as well as the original, and his vocal covers simulate the originals almost note for note, as in “Kiss and Make Up.” The synthesized back-beats are an unfortunate choice, but one ’90s smooth jazz artists opted for and got away with. Bob James, Hubert Laws, John Patitucci, Phil Upchurch, Randy Brecker, Nathan East, and vocalists Lisa Fischer and Brian McKnight all appear here, backing Benson up on these 12 songs. High points include the instrumental “Lost in Love” and the vocal “Got to be There.”

*****

Chick is the king of all whup-as-s when it comes to chops among monster jazz pianists. I mean, if you want to talk intense technique on the keys, no one even comes close, not Jarrett, not Mehldau, not Hancock, not Kuhn, not Oscar Peterson or Hiromi and not even Lyle Mays, just listen to the endlessly creative hundred note runs of 64ths he plays with crystal clear tone in improv all over this CD, almost blowing Vinnie out of his seat, time and time again. Now, Vinnie is already a well-known alien from another planet, such a great drummer (some say the best ever, including Zappa, who named him the prize-winner of those he played with in his autobiography) that hardly any player fazes him but Chick is out to teach the ‘kid’ a lesson and a lesson he does, in fact, impart. I think Chick went into this gig thinking, all-right, I’ve got the greatest drummer on the planet here next to the one I had before, let me throw out every lick I know, as fast and furious as I can dish it out and see what he does with it. Vinnie freezes in his seat sometimes with awe or maybe just mock awe out of respect (Chick & John McLaughlin are Vinnie’s ultimate idols) but then out of nowhere he does some unbelievable things with Chick’s avalanche of licks, anticipating perfectly a zillion note run with perfectly calibrated fills and those are the moments of gold this disc is legendary for among Chick & Vinnie fans. ”

AMG:
Given the heartbreaking context in which this album was released — this was the
final recording by saxophonist Michael Brecker, who died of myelodysplastic
syndrome and leukemia only a few months before its release — there might be a
certain temptation to cut it some slack for sentimental reasons. However,
leniency is hardly needed. Leading a group comprised of jaw-dropping talents
(pianists Herbie Hancock and Brad Mehldau, guitarist Pat Metheny, bassist
John Patitucci, drummer Jack DeJohnette) and playing for the first time a
program consisting entirely of original compositions, Brecker delivers an
emotionally rich and startlingly powerful album of straight-ahead modern jazz
that will stand as his musical epitaph and will effectively confound anyone
who has ever been tempted to dismiss him as a mere jazz-pop fusioneer.
It will also frustrate anyone looking for maudlin emotion or even any obvious
product of existential angst; the only concession to sentiment here is on the title
of a ballad, “When Can I Kiss You Again?,” a quote from Brecker’s teenage son
during a period in his treatment when his family was not allowed to touch him.
But even that track, with its unusual chord progression and sometimes rather
arid solos, retains a core of tough-mindedness within the tenderness.
Most of the rest of the program consists of uptempo and medium-tempo
burners that swing with a powerful sense of urgency and life, and precious little
foreshadowing of the tragedy that all involved knew was soon to come.
This is a brilliant and inspiring album — and would be whether or not it had
anything to do with the death of one of the great figures in American jazz.
This CD was nominated in 2007 for a Grammy award as Best Jazz Instrumental
Album (Individual or Group), and Brecker’s improvisation
on “Anagram” was nominated for Best Jazz Instrumental Solo.

==========================================

“After a highly impressive debut album and a stylistically simpler sophomore release, the Chick Corea Elektric Band proceeded to produce an album that was musically more advanced than anything they had accomplished before. The result, Eye of the Beholder, is arguably the best record the band produced in their seven-year existence. With saxophonist Eric Marienthal and guitarist Frank Gambale on board to enhance the core trio of Corea, Dave Weckl (drums) and John Patitucci (bass), Eye is the perfect balance of the group’s stunning technical chops, musical artistry and technological wizardry
